Many Choices
Hummingbird feeders are available in a range of different designs and are specifically made for these beautiful little birds. They differ slightly from other bird feeding products as the diet of this particular bird is not like other birds.
One of the first commercial feeders for Hummingbirds was designed by a Laurence J. Webster from Boston. He designed it for his wife who had read an article stating that the best type of bird feeding unit should be made from a glass bottle.
He took his design to a glassblower and in 1950 the Webster feeder for hummingbirds was made available for sale to the public.
Today there are many variations on that feeder available and they are sold in stores and online. However Hummingbirds do not know how to instinctively use them as a food source and must instead learn how to use them by observing others use one.
Below you can find out a little more about these beautiful birds, their diet, and habitat. You can also view several of the best feeding units available for the tiny wonders.

About the Hummingbird
Hummingbirds are some of the smallest of all birds and are common to gardens and yards where food is plentiful.
They get their name from the way they fly, their rapid wing flapping giving them the appearance of hovering in mid air. The beating of their wings makes a humming sound.
Tiny Birds
Despite their small size the Hummingbird can reach flight speeds of 54 km/h or 34 mph and yet they are some of the lightest birds. They are also the only group of birds that can actually fly backwards!
Sweet Taste
The diet of the Hummingbird consists mainly of nectar, the liquid contained within some types of flowers, the same flowers that attract bees. In fact Hummingbirds are particular about the type of nectar they like, preferring a sweeter taste and opting for the sweetest nectar.
Hummingbird Facts
Due to their extremely high metabolism rate, hummingbirds might die within their first year of life. Their wings make a humming sound similar to that of a bee and that’s why they acquired the name “Hummingbird.”
Hibernation
Birds go into a hibernating stage to conserve energy while they sleep and when food is scarce. They must do this due to their high metabolism rate. They are the only group of birds with the ability to fly backwards, which I find very interesting. The Bee Hummingbird is the smallest of the species measuring 5 cm.

Hummingbird Species to look for on your Feeder

Top Hummingbird Feeders vs Bottom Feeders
Top loading feeders are somewhat preferred by many. This is because all you have to do is unscrew the top and just fill in the liquid from the top and never have to touch the bottom. Bottom loader feeders are just the opposite. You have to unscrew the bottom and then flip the bottle over to fill it and then put the bottom on the top to cover and close it and then turn it back around as demonstrated in this video. There are pros and cons to each design as in most products but the real decision is your preference. These feeders all come in either glass or plastic. There seem to be more available in the bottom loading type. |

Hand Feeding Hummingbirds
How to Feed a Hummingbird It’s actually pretty easy to feed Hummingbirds as long as you have the right food. Some people choose to hand feed which is one option but for a more permanent way to attract these birds to your yard, all you will need is a feeder and some food. Fresh food The most important thing to remember is to keep your feeder cleaned regularly and to keep the food topped up. They prefer fresh nectar so don’t leave old uneaten food too long. |

Sphere Hummingbird Feeder
Link feeders together to serve a crowd Handcrafted red glass lid attracts hummingbirds and comes with four feeding ports. These wire frame dish feeders are crafted from black powder coated steel and may be linked together to serve a crowd. Includes hook, lid, and clear glass dish. Holds 4 oz. of nectar. Glass is dishwasher safe and measures 3-3/4 inches in diameter and 1-1/4 inches deep. Wire frame measures 6-1/8 x 7-1/2 inches. |
Eating Habits Hummingbirds eat nectar from flowers that is at least 10% sugar. The more sugar the better. For protein they eat insects and spiders. The majority of their activity is spent sitting or perching. They eat their food by grabbing it with their tongue. Hummingbirds can be very territorial (use several separate feeders). They eat 12 times their body weight in nectar each day. |
